While most students enjoy a much-needed reset over the two-day Fall Break, a select group of students opted to travel to the Dallas-Fort Worth area for industry tours at multiple facilities.

Traditionally, each fall, the Department of Poultry Science hosts an overnight trip to expose poultry science students to a variety of areas within the poultry and allied industries. This immersive experience allows students to step outside the classroom and see firsthand how concepts learned on campus translate into real-world operations. During fall break on October 13–14, nearly 20 Poultry Science students participated in this year’s trip.

The trip kicked off with lunch and an overview of operations at Ben E. Keith in Fort Worth, where students learned about large-scale foodservice distribution, logistics, and the critical role suppliers play in supporting restaurants and institutions across the region. Students then traveled to Standard Meat Company in Saginaw for an afternoon facility tour. There, they observed protein processing operations and discussed food safety, quality assurance, and workforce management with company representatives.

The second day began early with a visit to Brakebush in Irving, where students explored poultry processing operations and learned about career opportunities within a vertically integrated poultry company. Following the tour, the group returned to College Station that afternoon, bringing the trip to a close.

Experiences like these tours trip play a key role in preparing Poultry Science students for successful careers by helping them better understand the scope of the industry, build professional connections, and envision potential career paths within poultry and allied fields.
