Poultry evaluation provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the form and function of breeding and market animals. Through this process, students learn to assess conformation and overall functionality based on modern USDA poultry standards. The team prepares for competition by participating in the POSC 304: Poultry Evaluation course, which emphasizes the development of skills in selecting poultry for meat and egg strains, as well as grading live poultry, eggs, and ready-to-cook products through rigorous practices outside the classroom at the Poultry Science Research, Teaching, and Extension Center. The travel team is comprised of the top five students from the course, with the top four competing in the contest. The team's overall score is determined by the combined results of the top three individual performances. The team competes in one national contest each semester.

Through the course, she learned how to grade broken-outs and quickly discovered a passion for judging pullets. Katelyn plans to apply the time management and communication skills gained through the team as she pursues graduate school and a future career in the industry.
